How to Evaluate Pre-Owned Designer Costume Jewellery
Start with the piece you will actually receive. Clear photographs and a specific condition description are more useful than a broad adjective such as “excellent”.
Inspect the surfaces and fittings
Look at plating, exposed edges, stone settings, faux-pearl surfaces, enamel and the reverse. Ask about loose or missing elements, distortion and visible repairs. For earrings, inspect both sides and both fastenings. For a necklace or bracelet, check the clasp and connecting links.
Check practical fit
Review measurements, fastening type and any documented weight. Confirm whether the listing offers a pair or a single earring. Avoid assuming that original packaging, spare parts or accessories are included unless the description says so.
Separate condition from age and authenticity
Wear is not proof of age, and a clean surface is not proof of authenticity. Research attribution separately. Repairs and replacements should be described rather than hidden behind an overall grade.
Care starts before purchase
Chanel’s costume-jewellery care guidance advises keeping pieces away from water and chemical cleaners and storing them separately. Care suitable for fine jewellery may not suit mixed-material costume pieces. Ask a specialist before attempting restoration, polishing or immersion.
Make the decision with full information
Read the seller’s shipping and returns terms before paying. Consider the total purchase cost and any specialist work that may be required. At The Refashion, the photographs and description relate to the actual pre-owned item. Ask Kate for clarification where a material detail is unclear.
