Why Is Everyone Wearing Silver Again?

THE REFASHION JOURNAL · OBSERVATION 005
Gold had a good run. Nobody needs to panic.
BY KATE SLOANE
I keep noticing silver jewelry again.
Not just the occasional silver chain mixed in with gold, which has been happening for years because nobody can be bothered to follow the rules anymore. I mean proper silver. Big silver earrings. Thick silver cuffs. Heavy hoops. Pieces that look as though they might belong in a toolbox, a museum or someone’s very expensive bathroom.
For a while, everything was gold.
Gold hoops. Gold chains. Gold rings stacked on every available finger. Gold hardware on bags. Gold buttons. Gold lamps. Gold everything.
Now silver is back, looking cool and faintly judgmental.
Fashion has been predicting this for years. British Vogue was already talking about silver’s return in 2021, and its 2026 jewelry coverage is still pointing towards silver, mixed metals and larger sculptural pieces. At this point, silver has had more comebacks than most pop stars.

SILVER LOOKS BETTER WHEN IT IS NOT TRYING TOO HARD
Gold can be glamorous. Silver can be a little more difficult, which is part of the attraction.
A good silver earring does not necessarily make you look polished. It can make you look sharper, stranger, slightly more awake. It catches the light differently. Against black, it can look almost severe. Against a white shirt, it can look clean without becoming boring.
The best pieces are often quite simple in shape. A thick hoop. A curved pendant. A rounded cuff. Something with enough weight and presence that you do not need to add six other things to explain the outfit.
This is useful because most of us already own enough things that need explaining.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STOP WEARING GOLD
The slightly annoying thing about fashion trends is the way they are presented as replacements.
Silver is back, therefore gold is over. Skinny jeans are back, therefore wide-leg jeans are embarrassing. Somebody online has decided that your handbag is from the wrong decade and now you are expected to deal with it.
This is not how a jewelry drawer works.
You can wear silver with the gold watch you already own. You can put a silver earring next to a gold necklace and allow them to disagree. You can wear one metal because it looks good and another because it was a gift and you happen to like it.
A collection of jewelry should look collected. Not as though it arrived in one box with a styling diagram.
SILVER DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN SILVER
This is where it is worth paying attention.
Some pieces are sterling silver. Some are silver-tone. Some are simply made in a cool grey finish. Those are not the same thing, and a photograph will not always tell you which one you are looking at.
When you are buying pre-owned jewelry, check the description. Look at the material, the fastening, the measurements and the condition. If the listing says silver-tone, that is what it is. It can still be beautiful. It does not need a more expensive story attached to it.
A well-designed silver-tone earring is still a well-designed earring.
THE NICE THING ABOUT SECONDHAND JEWELRY
New collections arrive with a complete argument.
This is the season’s shape. This is the season’s color. This is what the designer thinks you should want now.
Secondhand jewelry is less organized. You might find a sculptural hoop from one decade, a chain from another and a pendant that has somehow survived three different versions of fashion.
That is what makes it interesting.
You are not buying a whole look. You are choosing one object and deciding whether it belongs in your life.
Sometimes it does not match anything. That is usually a good sign.
Before you buy something new, look at what you already own. The silver earrings at the back of the drawer may not be wrong. They may just need a different sweater, a different haircut or a day when you are less committed to looking sensible.
SO WHY SILVER AGAIN?
Maybe because gold has been everywhere for so long that silver now feels like a change.
Maybe because silver looks good with black, grey, denim and all the other colors people wear when they are tired.
Maybe because it feels a little less polished. A little more graphic. A little less interested in proving that you know what you are doing.
Or maybe you just like it.
That is still allowed.
The jewelry does not need to be part of a comeback story. It does not need to represent a new version of you. It can simply be the thing you put on before leaving the house because it makes your face look better.
Silver is back.
Apparently.
