Seen on Screen: Barbie and the Chanel Statement Necklace

The Jewellery Archive: Seen on Screen
Sometimes jewellery supplies the exclamation mark. In Barbie, the Chanel necklace does not quietly finish the look. It asks to be noticed.
The documented reference
British Vogue’s July 2023 account identifies the statement necklace worn by Margot Robbie’s Barbie among the film’s references to Chanel’s spring/summer 1995 collection. Its account also distinguishes archival garments from pieces recreated for filming. That distinction matters whenever a screen image becomes a shopping reference.
What the styling teaches
Our reading is about proportion: a substantial necklace can create a second neckline, giving a small jacket or simple top an entirely different rhythm. Colour and repeated motifs provide structure as well as decoration. A collector can appreciate that effect without needing to reproduce every element of a costume.
For everyday styling, choose which feature you want to carry over: the volume, the colour, the motif or the layering. Keeping one of those ideas makes a reference legible while leaving room for the wearer.
Similar mood is not the same object
The Chanel earrings pictured here are a separate piece from The Refashion’s inventory. They are not the film necklace, a screen-used object or a claimed runway match. Their catalogue title includes a year; consult the listing and ask Kate about its supporting details before purchase.
